The government has announced its decision to resume vehicle imports starting in January. The Ceylon Vehicle Importers Association has reported a positive response from the government regarding this move.

Indika Sampath Meranchige, the president of the association, addressed concerns surrounding the rumored imposition of a 600% tax on imported vehicles. He firmly stated that these rumors are unfounded and misleading. “If such exorbitant taxes were enforced, it would discourage consumers from purchasing vehicles altogether,” he emphasized.

Meranchige also pointed out that certain car dealership owners might be spreading these rumors to boost their sales of existing stock. He reassured the public that once vehicle imports resume, the current inflated prices are expected to normalize.

In conclusion, the return of vehicle imports is anticipated to alleviate the high costs currently plaguing the market, providing consumers with more affordable options.
