The wiretap systems of US courts were breached by Chinese hackers.

Chinese hackers breached the networks of U.S. broadband providers and gained access to systems used for court-authorized wiretapping, according to the Wall Street Journal. The telecom companies affected include Verizon Communications, AT&T, and Lumen Technologies. The hackers may have had access for months to network infrastructure used for complying with U.S. requests for communications data. China’s foreign ministry denied knowledge of the attack and accused the U.S. of fabricating a false narrative. The attack was attributed to a Chinese hacking group dubbed “Salt Typhoon” by U.S. investigators. Earlier this year, U.S. law enforcement disrupted a major Chinese hacking group known as “Flax Typhoon” and confronted Beijing about extensive cyber espionage under a campaign named “Volt Typhoon.”
