How did the October 7 attacks become a turning point for US politics?

Published:

After rushing to comfort Israel as it grieved the worst attack on Jews since the Holocaust, US President Joe Biden pledged last year that America would stand with the country in its dark days, insisting that good ones would come.
No one realized the global and local political impact of his commitment at the time. The resulting war highlighted the crucial role that the US played in Israel’s survival but also strained the alliance. It also revealed and deepened some of America’s most fundamental political divisions before an already chaotic US election. The attacks on October 7 not only reshaped the strategic dynamics of the Middle East as Israel faced off against Hamas, then Hezbollah, and exchanged fire with Iran, its archenemy, and the sponsor of the two groups. The tragedy triggered a series of events that impacted numerous lives and sparked political unrest thousands of miles away.
The United States and its allies have conducted two major military operations to defend Israel against missile and drone attacks from Iran. The US has also carried out airstrikes against Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen, who have targeted international ships in the Red Sea since October 7. Israel’s offensive against Hamas in Gaza, resulting in the deaths of thousands of civilians, may have put an end to US hopes for a two-state solution and has become the most significant foreign crisis of the Biden administration.
