Professor Wasantha Athukorala from the Department of Economics and Statistical Studies at Peradeniya University stated that the recent inflow of foreign exchange has led to the strengthening of the Sri Lankan rupee. He attributed this to an increase in foreign remittances and tourism income, resulting in a higher amount of dollars entering the country.
However, he expressed concern that the continued strengthening of the rupee could negatively impact the country’s exporters, while providing greater benefits to importers. As a result, he advocated for maintaining a stable value for the rupee, rather than allowing it to strengthen further.
It is not ideal for the Sri Lankan rupee to continue strengthening. The Sri Lankan rupee should remain stable.
