Tram Crashes into Shop in Oslo, Injuring Four People.

Published:

A tram derailed in central Oslo on Tuesday, crashing into a computer store and injuring the driver and at least three other individuals. The incident occurred during the morning rush hour, prompting a swift response from emergency services in the Norwegian capital.

According to Norwegian police, the blue tram, operated by the Oslo transport authority Sporveien, left its tracks while making a left turn onto Storgata, a major thoroughfare in the city. Instead of completing the turn, the tram continued straight, colliding forcefully with the storefront of a four-story building. At the time of the crash, approximately 20 passengers were aboard the tram, but authorities reported that none sustained severe injuries.

Emergency responders treated the injured at the scene, with the driver being among the first to receive assistance. The police confirmed that while the injuries were concerning, they were not life-threatening. “We’re grateful that it wasn’t worse,” said a police spokesperson.

Eyewitnesses described the chaotic moments that unfolded as the tram derailed. Thomas Larsen, a 41-year-old demolition worker who was riding an electric scooter, witnessed the incident from close proximity. “I hit the brakes. Three seconds later, I would have been under it,” he recounted, expressing his disbelief at how close he came to danger. “It is scary that this could happen in the middle of the city.”

Another witness described a loud noise followed by the tram crashing into the store. “People were in shock,” they said. “It was a scene of confusion and panic as everyone tried to understand what had just happened.”

The crash prompted a large-scale emergency response, with police, ambulance crews, and fire services quickly arriving at the scene. Authorities cordoned off the area, allowing emergency teams to operate without obstruction. In addition to treating the injured, responders evacuated the building to ensure no one else was inside.

As part of standard procedure, police announced that the structure housing the computer store would be inspected for any potential damage that could pose further risks. “We want to ensure that the building is safe before allowing anyone back in,” a police official said.

As of now, the cause of the tram’s derailment remains unclear. A spokesperson for Sporveien stated, “It is too early to say what caused the incident. We are going to have to conduct inquiries on site by our specialists.” Investigators are expected to analyze both the tram’s operations and the track conditions to determine what led to the derailment.
